A LITTLE MORE ABOUT BURUNDI AND THE HISTORY OF THEIR COFFEE

Burundi’s history with coffee is fascinating.  In a nutshell, the government used to own all the coffee farms and so controlled the export of this precious commodity from every angle.  Today the export of coffee is still very much government controlled, but you will not find any one major coffee grower in Burundi.  Businesses exporting coffee buy from individual farmers or families, perhaps from several at once.  This helps to eliminate large commercial farming companies endorsing cheap labour and monopolizing the market.

There are currently over 800,000 Burundian families involved in growing coffee across the country.

It is extremely difficult to export coffee from Burundi, but Long Miles Coffee has it down to an art.  They have found the sweet spot of being large enough to export freely, but being small enough to care about each individual farmer.
